September is Suicide Awareness Month and a local group is shedding a sobering light on the number of veterans who commit suicide.
Volunteers have planted 660 American flags in the grass outside St. Peter’s Reformed Church in Zelienople to represent the estimated number of veterans who die each month because of suicide. According to data collected by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 20 to 22 military veterans end their own lives each day.
The group behind the effort is the organization A.J. 22 Too Many, which is named after a local Army veteran who committed suicide in 2016.
