With the Lenten season now underway, many local churches and organizations will rev up the deep fryer tonight for the first fish fry of the year.
The tradition of not eating meat on Fridays stretches back to the early days of the Catholic Church, where initial canon law said meat was off-limits on all Fridays.
In the 1960s, that guidance was formally revised to just include Lent.
Since that time, fish frys have become a popular fundraiser and social gathering.
A typical fish fry dinner in the area will consist of the fish, French fries or some sort of potato, coleslaw, bread and butter—and hopefully a homemade dessert.
