The first legal sale of medical marijuana in the state of Pennsylvania happened Thursday morning in Butler.
The CY+ Dispensary on Pillow Street began seeing patients at 9 a.m. There was a small line of people waiting for the doors to open. The business says they already have 100 appointments booked through their first weekend of business.
CY+ will carry over 100 pharmaceutical-grade, medical marijuana products including capsules, oils, waxes, concentrates and tinctures.
“We want patients to feel as comfortable in our dispensary that they would in their local pharmacy as they are now both places you can get medicine in Pennsylvania,” Charlie Bachtell, Cresco Yeltrah Co-Founder, said.
You need to have a medical marijuana card to book an appointment. Pennsylvania residents suffering from one of 17 medical conditions can apply.
“This is a dream come true and I am ecstatic to be one of the first caregivers to legally purchase medical marijuana in the state,” Diana Briggs of Westmoreland County said. “We are ready to begin the next phase Ryan’s journey healing with this amazing medicine.”
Briggs’ son, Ryan, suffers from up to 400 seizures a day and has experienced numerous side effects using traditional prescription medications.
“I am feeling so many different emotions making my first purchase of medical marijuana legally in Pennsylvania, from excitement that Hannah and others will finally have access to a safe alternative treatment option, to relief that I will not have to worry about where I am going to get her product or if it will get to me timely,” said Heather Shuker, whose daughter Hannah suffers from severe intractable epilepsy.
CY+ will be accepting walk-in consultations between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. More than 4,000 patients have been issued a medical marijuana card by the PA Department of Health after being certified by a physician for having one of the 17 serious medical conditions. Those interested in more information on getting a card should visit www.pa.gov.
