A woman whose family controls several Western Pennsylvania cheese-making firms will plead guilty, along with two of her companies, to charges their grated cheese had too little cheese and too much wood pulp.
Michelle Myrter of Castle Cheese is scheduled to plead guilty before a federal judge in Pittsburgh Friday.
She’ll also be pleading guilty on behalf of International Packing, LLC and Universal Cheese & Drying Inc., both based in the Slippery Rock area. Myrter faces up to a yar in prison and a $500,000 fine.
According to the lawsuit, Castle Cheese labeled their Romano and Parmesan cheeses as ‘real’ cheeses, but they, in fact, did not meet the FDA standards for cheese and contained artificial ingredients.
