A firefighter currently engaged in a lawsuit against the City of Butler has retired following a recent promotion.
Donald Crawford was promoted to the rank of Captain by a vote of City Council in August before Council approved Crawford’s retirement at their meeting last week.
Attorneys for Crawford filed suit in February of 2023 demanding payment for lost wages he would have earned if he was promoted according to city regulations. The suit contends the city passed over Crawford for promotions as well as ignored his claims of harassment. The City alleges that Crawford engaged in “inappropriate and unprofessional conduct.”
Councilman Don Shearer spoke about this most recent development.
“I think its insulting to the honor and integrity to every firefighter that has ever held the rank of captain that we have someone that has accepted a promotion, did not complete the probationary period, and did not work a single day with that title and retiring with that title,” Shearer said. “That being said, I wish him well in his future endeavors and in his retirement. But, it’s a little insulting to me, and probably to the firefighters.”
According to City Solicitor Tom Breth, the suit is still being argued in the courtroom of Common Pleas Judge S. Michael Yeager where preliminary objections have been granted and an amended complaint is expected next month.
