With frigid temperatures expected over the next several days, residents are reminded to use caution when heating homes.
The National Fire Protection Association reports dangerous and costly home heating fires are common this time of year, mostly as a result of space heaters.
Anything flammable should be kept at least three feet away from any heating equipment. Fireplaces and chimneys can also be the cause of home heating fires when not cleaned and inspected annually by a professional.
Experts also recommend that fuel-burning equipment be vented to the outside to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Visit the NFPA website for more home heating safety tips and information.
