No one was injured as a result of a small fire in the city of Butler Thursday afternoon. Butler City Fire Department Captain Jim Kaufman:
“Whenever we got there the police said there was a small fire on the second floor back deck area that had spread into the exterior wall.”
The fire at 309 West Cunningham Street was called in around 1:30 p.m. as all residents safely evacuated the building. Units from Butler City and the VA responded to the scene and Butler Township’s ladder truck was put on standby in case it was needed.
Crews were on the scene about an hour and around $6,000 in damage was estimated to have been done to the building. According to Kaufman, the resident of the apartment was cooking and noticed something wrong.
“It’s a rental unit, there are four units in there, and two of them are vacant. The second floor apartment deck in the back is where the fire originated. The person in the second floor of the affected apartment, they were cooking breakfast. They walked to a bedroom that was near the back of the building and they noticed smoke. They walked into the laundry room that’s in the back and they noticed fire on the floor coming from the outside.”
The source of the fire was determined to be misuse of smoking or tobacco products and no investigation is expected to be needed.
