The FBI in Pittsburgh is warning parents about an increase of incidents in the region dealing with sexual extortion of teenagers.
It’s also called “sextortion” and it’s when an adult contacts a minor and coerces them into sending sexually explicit content in order to extort money.
The FBI says this particular scheme is targeting teenage boys on social media. The scammer poses as a young female and manipulates the teen to engage in an explicit activity over video.
The video is then secretly recorded and the scammer then attempts to extort the victim for money.
FBI officials say education your children is key to stopping these individuals.
