Fallout from the discovery of high levels of lead and copper in the drinking water at Summit Elementary School ran deep.
Several Butler Area School District officials stepped down, including Superintendent Dr. Dale Lumley. He resigned in early February after more than 900 people signed a petition calling for him to do so. In the coming weeks, assistant superintendent for elementary education Dr. Mary Wolf and district maintenance supervisor Glenn Terwilliger also resigned.
It came to light in January of this year that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection had run tests in August of 2016 that showed high levels of lead in the drinking water at Summit, but parents weren’t notified for months.
The elementary school has since been connected up to public water (it used to run on well water), all water fixtures have been replaced, and tests done in November by district-hired water engineers showed the water is safe to drink.
