Negotiators from the State System of Higher Education and its faculty union met again Thursday in hopes of agreeing on a contract.
Both sides maintain some progress was made and representatives will meet back at the bargaining table October 14-16. If no deal is reached, however, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties says it will strike on Oct. 19.
The faculty union, which represents more than 5,000 professors and coaches who work at the 14 state universities, is about to enter its 16th month of working under an expired contract.
If they strike, it would be the first-ever faculty walkout in state system history and could disrupt classes for more than 100,000 students.
Slippery Rock University, California University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro are all state schools.
