A new federal law goes into effect today that requires owners of drones to register their aircrafts.
The Federal Aviation Administration has mandated that all current drone owners age 13 and older need to register before February 19th. Everyone who becomes an owner after today should register before their first flight. This rule applies to all drones between a half pound and 55 pounds in weight used for non-commercial purposes.
The goal of this law is to allow the agency to work more closely with drone owners on safe operation. Those who do not comply could be subject to civil and criminal penalties.
The cost of the registration is free if done in the next month. For more information or to register online, visit faa.gov/uas/registration/.
