National Safe Boating Week is underway.
“Pennsylvania ranked 7th out of all the states in the U.S. for boating deaths in 2014,” Rachel Bryson of the Pennsylvania Division of the American Trauma Society says. “We had 21 individuals who died as a result of some type of boating-related crash.”
Safety experts say the most important thing anyone heading out on the water can bring is their life jacket.
“And that goes for any type of boat in any type of waterway,” Bryson said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re on a speed boat in the middle of the ocean or a kayak on your local waterway.”
Across the country, 84 percent of people who died in boating crashes were not wearing a life vest.
