A fundraising campaign is underway for an East Butler volunteer firefighter who was seriously injured this week in a swimming pool accident.
Zac Hack was hurt early Sunday, according to East Butler Volunteer Fire Department Chief Derek Thompson. Details surrounding the accident are unclear but Hack suffered a neck injury and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh where he remains.
“He’s going to be there for a little while,” Thompson said Friday. “He has a long recovery ahead.”
An online GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with medical expenses. By Friday morning, over $7,000 had already been raised.
Thompson said his department got the call early Sunday to assist with this accident, and they quickly realized it was surrounding one of their own.
“East Butler Borough is a really small community. Everybody’s close. Everybody knows everybody. We had a feeling when we got the call,” he said.
Thompson said Zac is one of his lieutenants in the fire department. He says he is really one of those people that would ‘give the shirt off his back.’
“He’s a young kid, but he has the biggest heart I’ve ever seen. He does so much…for his community, for the fire department. He’s just a great kid,” Thompson said.
A benefit dinner is being planned for late September in East Butler. Donations for the dinner are being accepted. Details here.
