Butler Township administrators have recently received an application from a company interested in opening a medically assisted treatment program.
According to Township Zoning Officer Jesse Hines, Foundations Medical Services has made application for the facility at 160 Hindman Road which was formerly the location of the Butler Cancer Treatment Center.
The application for building permit is currently being reviewed by a third party to make sure the plans fit township commercial code. As long as everything is in order, approval for the permit is expected to be given by April 25th. Since this is already a permitted use for the facility, there will be no need for the company to present at the Planning Commission or Zoning Hearing Boards.
Hines explained that using facilities for substance abuse treatment clinics is a complicated and contentious issue since municipalities are unable to allow certain medical treatments while at the same time rejecting others. Municipalities including DuBois, Philadelphia, and Reading that have tried to deny companies providing this treatment have been successfully sued for civil rights violations.
Foundations Medical Services currently operates a substance abuse treatment facility in the city of Butler at 124 Hollywood Drive Pullman Center. A call to Foundations Medical Services was not immediately returned.
