The Butler Area School Board has contracted with an Ohio company to conduct random drug testing on some students.
Butler will pay Sport Safe Testing $29 per drug test. Sport Safe was the only company to submit a proposal to the district. Sport Safe currently provides drug testing services for the Mars and Seneca Valley school districts.
Sport Safe personnel will administer the tests during school, and work with principals to minimize class disruption and maintain confidentiality. The first step for any student receiving a positive result will be contact to a parent or guardian.
The district says it will hold an informational night for parents regarding testing before it begins. The date and time for that meeting has yet to be set.
The district decided in July to put a random drug testing policy in place. High school student athletes, those who participate in other extra-curriculars, and students who elect to drive to school will be subject to the tests.
