The driver of a pickup truck killed Tuesday morning in a head-on crash with a state police vehicle in Middlesex Township has been identified.
According to State Police, 47-year-old Joseph Hufnagel of Butler was traveling about 6:15 a.m. on the Route 228 sharp curve known as “Ball’s Bend.”
Police say Hufnagel lost control of his Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and traveled across the double yellow center line. He crashed head-on into an on-duty Pennsylvania State Police trooper from the Butler Barracks.
Hufnagel was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead on scene. The trooper suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing to determine if speed or the use of a cell phone were factors in the crash.
