About 50 people attended a town hall meeting in South Butler on Tuesday night as the South Butler School District and its teachers continue to work towards reaching an agreement.
A community group- the South Butler School Action Committee- organized the event. Organizers say they invited all nine school board members in hopes of having a conversation with them directly but only one attended. George Zacherl was the only school board member there, whose wife is a teacher in the district.
Zacherl answered questions on topics including district communication, budget, safety, staffing and priorities. Zacherl does not sit on the board’s contract negotiation team and stressed that he was answering questions for himself only, and not for the entire school board.
The South Butler teachers were instructed by the state to get back on the job on Tuesday. The teachers union and the school board will not go through specific steps in hopes of signing a new contract.
