The investigation into a fire at a downtown Butler building earlier this week continues but that building has been condemned.
Building Code Official John Evans told our newsroom that the western half of the building at 138 West Jefferson Street has fire and severe structural damage while the eastern half mostly has smoke and water damage.
After the State Fire Marshal investigation has been completed, a decision will need to be made by the building owner in the next two weeks if the structure will be repaired or torn down. Residents of the two story apartment building that also contained the China Palace restaurant are being allowed back in to get belongings as long as they are accompanied.
No fire damage has been reported to have occurred to the building next door at 142 West Jefferson although some repairs are necessary after firefighters needed to make a forced entry during the fire Wednesday around 4 p.m.
