The Butler Area School Board has authorized a sales agreement for the former Broad Street elementary school that includes extra time for the ARC of Butler County to negotiate with the City of Butler.
District Solicitor Tom King was directed to tell the attorney for the ARC that the organization can take up to five months after the official sale is completed in order to petition the city for any necessary special zoning exceptions.
The board agreed earlier this month to sell the now-closed school to the ARC for $400,000.
Several members of city council have said in the past they would be opposed to granting “special exceptions” for non-profit organizations attempting to purchase the former school. If denied approval, the ARC could appeal council’s decision to a judge. The deal would be off if negotiations with the city take longer than five months following the hearing for the sale.
No hearing date for the official sale has been set. Any additional interested buyers can make an offer during that hearing.
