The Butler Area School District is hoping to reopen the now-closed Broad Street Elementary School as a temporary place for the Summit Elementary students to go to until the water issues at Summit are resolved.
Dr. William Pettigrew- who is heading the Summit water project team- said late Tuesday morning that the district is currently working with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to go through the necessary steps to get Broad Street Elementary back open. Specific permits have to be obtained and officials have to determine that the building is functionally properly.
“This is the current plan that the district is looking into,” Pettigrew said. “It is not yet set in stone. It’s an option that they’re taking a look at.”
The Broad Street building in the City of Butler was last used during the 2014-2015 school year. It, and several other elementary schools, were then closed as part of the district’s consolidation plan.
The two elementary schools are roughly six miles apart.
