It’s April, which means it’s also National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
A new AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety survey found that 58 percent of motorists believed using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, but 49 percent said they did so anyway.
“Do not text message. Do not email. Put the phone away,” AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Kathleen Miller said.
Distracted driving was thought to be a factor in more than 16,000 Pennsylvania crashes in 2016, including 61 fatalities. But Miller says it might be even be more than that.
“Distracted driving is extraordinarily difficult to detect following a crash and that makes it one of the most under-reported traffic safety issues,” she said.
Another AAA study found distractions contributed to 58 percent of crashes involving teen drivers.
