Election security is always top of mind for Butler County Elections Director Shari Brewer.
She says she’s confident in the various steps put in place to ensure the integrity of our election today.
“There are certain codes to get into the machines. All the machines are numbered and sealed. There are several, several security steps that we take to ensure those machines haven’t been tampered with,” she said.
Brewer says local poll workers have been instructed to be-on-the-lookout for anyone tampering with the back of a voting machine.
“If anyone is seen messing around with the back of a machine, my poll workers would be immediately over there chasing them out,” she said.
If you have an issue when you go to vote today and need to contact the Butler County Bureau of Elections, their number is 724-284-5309. The PA Department of State’s Voter Hotline is 1-877-868-3772.
The state Auditor General will be monitoring today’s elections statewide.
Auditor General Eugene DePasquale says he’ll be in touch with the Department of State to determine if there are any problems that may need to be addressed by his department’s audit on voting security.
DePasquale says the audit was prompted- in part- by information by the Department of Homeland Security confirming that Pennsylvania was one of 21 states Russian hackers targeted before the 2016 election.
DePasquale says the goal is to have the audit completed, so that any changes that may need to be made can be implemented for the 2019 election to make sure the state is prepared for the 2020 presidential election.
