The Diocese of Pittsburgh is updating masking policies in churches and schools for later this month.
According to Bishop David Zubik, a drop in local COVID-19 infections will result in masks no longer being required in parishes beginning Saturday, February 26th.
Also at that time, parishioners will again be invited to share the Sign of Peace, laity will be able to present the gifts of bread and wine, and parish events outside of Mass may be held in person, although livestream events will continue for those unable to attend in person. The distribution of Precious Blood from the cup will remain suspended.
Masks will no longer be required to be worn in schools as of Feb 28 but the requirement will remain in place for people on school buses as required by federal law. Anyone who has tested positive for COVID must wear a mask for five days upon returning to school.
Anyone who is sick or feels anxiety about being part of a large group at this time is still excused from the obligation to attend Mass. Zubik agrees with Pope Francis that everyone eligible should be vaccinated against COVID-19.
