Denny Hamlin won the first Chase race of the Sprint Cup season Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. Hamlin’s win was the ninth victory in the last twelve races for J-G-R. It’s his twenty-sixth career Cup Series win, tying Hamlin with Hall of Fame driver Fred Lorenzen for twenty-seventh place on NASCAR’s all-time list. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Carl Edwards was second, followed by Kurt Busch. Defending series champion Kevin Harvick crashed during the race and finished 42nd. With the victory, Hamlin’s second of the season, he automatically qualifies for the second round of the Chase format that begins October 10th in Charlotte.
