This was the first election using Pennsylvania’s newly drawn congressional districts.
Congressman Mike Kelly, who used to represent all of Butler County under the 3rd District, will run against Democrat Ron DiNicola in November in the new 16th District, which now only covers the western half of Butler County.
DiNicola, an attorney and veteran from Erie, defeated Chris Rieger of Cranberry Township and Robert Multari of Mercer County. Reiger received 70 percent of the vote in Butler County, likely due to the local tie.
The eastern half of Butler County is now in the 15th District, which stretches into the center of the state and includes 14 counties. Incumbent Republican Congressman Glenn Thompson will face Democrat Susan Boser in November. Boser defeated fellow Democrat Wade Jodun by 84 percent of the vote in Butler County.
A portion of Cranberry Township in southern Butler County falls into the 17th District. Incumbent Democrat Conor Lamb will face incumbent Republican Keith Rothfus in the general election.
