A line of briefly moderate to heavy snow fell early Wednesday morning leaving behind an inch- or a bit more- on many Butler County roadways.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Butler County during the morning hours, but it has since expired.
What remains is the Wind Chill Warning, which is in effect for more than 48 hours from when it began. It will continue through 7 a.m. Friday.
A Wind Chill Warning means the combination of very cold air and the wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken, according to the National Weather Service.
The snow has tapered off but forecasters say to expect blowing snow as we move throughout the day. The NWS expects temperatures to hit –5 by late this afternoon, with wind chill values as low as –27. Tonight, expect an actual air temperature of –8 is expected, with wind chills values as low as –26.
At this point, Butler County has not opened any warming centers. People in need of public assistance- including a warm place to go, heating oil or propane- should call the United Way at 2-1-1.
Public places- such as libraries- are considered ‘warming centers’ so you’re advised to go there if places are open.
County officials say they are continuously monitoring weather conditions and will open shelters based on the needs of citizens.
The Grapevine Center in Butler is open on Wednesday- and everyday- from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for folks needing a warming shelter. There is free coffee, TV and internet. The center is located at 140 North Elm Street in Butler.
