Fire departments in northern Butler County spent a large part of Tuesday afternoon battling a series of brush fires thought to have been ignited by a passing train.
The fires started around 1 p.m. in dry brush along the Canadian National Railway Company line. Wind spread the fire to stacks of railroad ties along the tracks.
State and railroad officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the fires. It’s under investigation by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
