A local dance teacher and star of the reality television series ‘Dance Moms’ has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of bankruptcy fraud.
Abby Lee Miller, 50, has been charged on 20 counts.
Investigators say she lied about her income and hid assets after filing bankruptcy at her dance studio in Penn Hills. She’s accused of creating secret bank accounts to hid over $750,000 she earned from the TV show ‘Dance Moms’ and related spinoffs, as well as teaching gigs and merchandise and apparel sales.
She could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.
“Federal bankruptcy proceedings can be a lifesaver for honest individuals overwhelmed by debt resulting from any number of legitimate reasons, but allegations of fraud and abuse threaten the integrity of the bankruptcy process and the public’s trust in it. We take our responsibility to pursue allegations of bankruptcy fraud seriously,” said Special Agent in Charge Scott S. Smith of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Pittsburgh Division.
Many Butler County dance students know Miller from competing in area competitions with her students.
