The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-6 Thursday afternoon at PNC Park to take three of four games in their series. The Cubs are now two games behind the Pirates in the N.L. Central. Pirates pitching allowed the Cubs 17 hits in the game, and Chicago broke the game open with six runs in the fifth inning. Charlie Morton took the loss. He allowed five earned runs over four innings of work. Travis Snider, Gregory Polanco and Pedro Alvarez each hit home runs for the Pirates.
The Pirates begin a 10-game road trip tonight in Los Angeles. Game time tonight is 10:10pm.
The Pirates trail the St. Louis Cardinals by five games now after the Cards completed a sweep of Milwaukee last night.
Pirate infielder Jung Ho Kang was lost for the season Thursday when he was injured by a sliding Cubs player. Kang, who became one of the top rookies in the National League this season, suffered a broken leg and torn MCL on the play while turning a double play. He underwent surgery last night at Allegheny General Hospital. His recovery time is 6 to 8 months.
Former Pirate broadcaster Milo Hamilton died Thursday at the age of 88. Hamilton worked for the Pirates from 1976-1979, taking over for Bob Prince.
