The Pittsburgh Pirates were swept by the Chicago Cubs following an 8-3 loss Sunday at Wrigley Field. The Bucs had built a 3-1 lead through the first three innings, but starting pitcher Trevor Williams ended up allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 5-1/3rd innings. Williams allowed three home runs. His record fell to 3-3, while his ERA climbed to 5.17. Rookies Kevin Newman and Bryan Reynolds led the Bucs with two hits each.
The Pirates began the weekend 2-1/2 behind Chicago following the All-Star break. They are now 5-1/2 back. The Cubs have moved seven games above .500 while the Pirates have fallen four games under.
The Bucs move on to St. Louis tonight. First pitch is 8:15pm. WISR pre-game is 7:50pm.
The Pirates have sent reliever Keone Kela to Triple-A Indianapolis for a rehab assignment.
