The Pittsburgh Pirates had no answers for Kyle Hendricks last night as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Bucs 3-0 at Wrigley Field. Hendricks allowed just three hits over seven innings for his 13th victory of the season. Pirate pitching allowed just five hits to the Cubs, but the big blow was a first inning home run by Josh Rizzo off Chad Kuhl, who allowed all three earned runs over five innings. The Bucs and Cubs wrap up their three game series tonight at 8:05pm. Pre-game on WISR 680am will be 7:40pm.
Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Pirates. Jason Hammel for the Cubs.
The Pirates have now fallen 2-1/2 games back in the National League Wild Card race, and are tied with the New York Mets.
The Pirates have completed the trade for pitcher Ivan Nova, sending left-hander Stephen Tarpley and outfielder Tito Polo to the New York Yankees. The 22-year old Polo played in low-A ball this season and had 16 home runs. Tarpley was also in low-A. He was acquired along with Steven Brault in the Travis Snider trade in 2015.
