The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 last night at PNC Park to open a three-game series. Andrew McCutchen hit his sixth home run in the first inning to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead, but Gerrit Cole didn’t make it through five innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. His record fell to 2-3. It was the Pirates second straight loss. The teams play again tonight at 7:05pm. Jon Niese will start for the Pirates. He is 3-0 this season. Jake Arrieta for the Cubs with a 5-0 record.
Pirates catching prospect Elias Diaz will have season-ending elbow surgery this week.
Top pitching prospect Tyler Glasnow has been named the International League pitcher of the week. Glasnow pitched 11 scoreless innings over two starts last week for Triple-A Indianapolis. He struck out 18.
