The Chicago Cubs completed a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates following a 6-2 victory Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park. The loss was the Pirates fourth in a row. They have fallen six games behind the Cubs. The Pirates had 11 hits in the game, but failed to score until the seventh inning. Pirate starter Juan Nicasio allowed four runs on eight hits, but only one run was earned.
The Pirates are off today and begin a three-game series in St. Louis tomorrow night. The Bucs are in second place in the Central Division with a 15-13 record, 1-1/2 games in front of the Cards, who are 13-14.
The news not as bad as expected for catching prospect Elias Diaz, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow. The injury will keep him out for two months, but is not season-ending.
The Pirates may see the return of third baseman Jung Ho Kang soon. His rehabilitation assignment ends Saturday, although it could be extended a few days. Kang has played 13 games with Triple-A Indianapolis and has six hits in 40 at-bats.
