All eyes were on Pennsylvania’s most famous rodent Thursday morning as we celebrate Groundhog Day today.
Just before 7:30 a.m., thousands watched as Punxsutawney Phil made his highly-anticipated weather prognostication- seeing his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob, which means six more weeks of wintry weather are expected.
Today marked the tradition’s 131st year. Marissa Rigatti from our partner station ‘Sunny 106’ in Dubois, Pennsylvania made the trip to Punxsutawney for the festivities.
“It’s so much fun,” Rigatti said. “People go all out with handmade groundhog hats and decorations…and all the kids are off school.”
And it’s much more than just fun. Governor Tom Wolf says the event brings $1 million into the local economy of Punxsutawney- a town of just 5,500 residents.
