The 4 Nations Face-Off tournament began last night with Canada defeating Sweden 4-3 in overtime in Montreal. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was named the “First Star” of the game had three points, assisting on the game’s first goal in the opening minute by setting up Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon on a power play. He then set up Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the game-winner.
Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson had an assist for Sweden.
Canada receives two points for winning the game in overtime, while Sweden receives one point. The two teams with the most points after the Round Robin games will play for the championship next Thursday. The United States and Finland meet tonight at 8pm. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Last night was Crosby’s third career three-point game in an NHL International Tournament game for Canada, in seven all-time games. Team Canada has now won 26 straight games when Crosby has been in the lineup in any tournament.
