Fire Departments in northern Butler County spent a large part of Tuesday afternoon battling a series of brush fires thought to have been ignited by a train.
The first call came in to the Butler County 911 Center just before 1 p.m. for a brush fire on Browntown Road in Mercer Township near the railroad tracks. Crews from Harrisville, Marion Township, and West Sunbury were among those responding to that scene.
Additional calls came in for similar fires in Lawrence and Mercer Counties before crews from Slippery Rock and Prospect were called out to a brush fire off Stamm Road in Slippery Rock Township. The railroad had to be shutdown to allow for firefighters to deal with several piles of railroad ties that were burning.
No injuries or structural damage was reported as a result of those fires but the cause is thought to have been a train that recently passed by.
