Pennsylvania’s entry into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative is on hold.
A Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court judge ruled last week to grant a request for a preliminary injunction against the state joining the initiative—also known as RGGI.
It’s a move to the delight of local State Senator Joe Pittman.
It was a significant victory. I expect there will be more appeals and more legal gymnastics to occur, but this was very important because it speaks to the importance of co-equal governance, it speaks to the reality that the governor cannot unilaterally impose a tax and it speaks to the need for us to protect energy workers in our commonwealth,” Pittman said.
Power plant operators, the coal industry, and some labor groups requested the action.
Governor Tom Wolf’s office believes he has the authority to enter into the agreement without legislative approval.
