A Pennsylvania court has ruled that the state’s funding mechanism for schools is unconstitutional.
A Commonwealth Court judge ruled this week that all public schools in Pennsylvania must be supported equally. The decision comes almost 10 years after the initial lawsuit was filed.
The ruling mandates that lawmakers and the governor’s office give schools resources that meet constitutional standards. The decision also said the state is discriminating against poorer school districts.
Advocates, including Governor Josh Shapiro’s office, are calling the decision a win for lower-income districts; however the ruling is expected to be appealed.
