A treasure hunt is officially underway in Butler County.
The Glass Blowing Center in Hilliards is behind the Butler Area Marble Hunt. Handmade, glass marbles, pendants and other glass treasures have been hidden throughout the county and surrounding areas. Pictures and clues are posted daily on Facebook. Those who wish to participate will have to join the Butler Area Marble Hunt Facebook group to receive the clues.
The marbles have a value of between $25 and $150.
The Butler Area Marble Hunt was inspired by the World’s Biggest Marble Hunt, which is an organized treasure hunt for marbles located all around the world. Chad Parker, a local glass blowing artist, wanted to bring the event closer to home and created the Butler Area Marble Hunt.
Though they are already marbles hidden throughout the county, a ‘kickoff event’ of sorts will take place at the Glass Blowing Center on July 14-15 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. There will be giveaways, glass blowing demonstrations, sign-up sheets for marble-making classes and over 12 glass blowers visiting from as far west as California, and as far east as New Jersey. At least 100 marbles will be hidden throughout the county over the course of the kickoff event.
“I’ve been making marbles for eight years. Once people find the marbles they start collecting them, then it sparks an interest to start making their own at marble-making classes,” said Chad Parker, local marble maker.
Organizers say the Butler Area Marble Hunt is a unique way to explore the county and is something that will go on indefinitely.
“Treasure hunting is a lot of fun and it’s a great bonding experience for families,” said Tom Doner, owner and artist at the Glass Blowing Center.
“We are excited for people to explore Butler County and discover attractions while hunting for unique, handmade glass treasures, ” said Jack Cohen, President of Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau.
