About $30,000 will be spent to upgrade the software on Butler County’s 500 voting machines to ensure they are all in working order for the upcoming presidential primary and general election.
Director of Elections Shari Brewer says the current voting system is about 10 years old and while there aren’t any major issues with it, there have been some minor problems. The $30,000 contract will allow for regular maintenance and support services for the software, which is something the county currently does not have. The voting machines themselves will not be replaced.
Brewer says on a normal election year, about 400 machines are used countywide, which leaves 100 extra machines that can be swapped in if a machine stops working. But, since this is a presidential election year, all 500 machines will need to be in working order.
“We want to ensure the integrity of the election for our voters,” Brewer said.
The Butler County commissioners unanimously approved the contract Wednesday.
The Pennsylvania primary election will be held on Tuesday, April 26.
