Butler County officials are looking for other possible funding avenues for a sewage replacement project in northern Butler County.
The Department of Environmental Protection is requesting an upgrade of the sewage system in the Boyers area. However, it comes with a bit of a price tag at an estimated $5.2 million.
Earlier this week, county commissioners approved an application for a Community Development Block Grant of $3.75 million. County officials hope that will alleviate some of the costs on the 95 homes in Marion Township.
Initially, commissioners were seeking a loan through the state’s PennVEST bank. However, the group said the loan would result in each house paying $95 monthly for sewage, with a majority of the homes in that area classified as low-to-moderate income.
County officials believe that with the grant funding they could bring the monthly fee closer to $55 per month. For comparison, most residents of the Butler Area Sewer Authority pay around $38 each month.
The grant application is due in early August.
