The bed tax in Butler County is increasing at the beginning of August.
The county commissioners voted to increase from 3 percent to 5 five percent on Wednesday. The increase is expected to bring in an additional $600,000 into the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau according to President Jack Cohen.
A bed tax is placed on any lodging that has bedding and water service. Cabins and university housing (used for alternative purposes during the summer and winter breaks) will be taxable for the first time.
Tourism Bureau President Jack Cohen said the increase will not primarily affect Butler County residents it will affect visitors coming into the county.
Commissioner Board Chairman Leslie Osche said hotel operators agreed to the increase as long as their businesses were promoted through marketing, which is what the tourism bureau will do.
