Butler County’s Children and Youth Services department will hire two caseworkers to combat the additional workload brought on by new state regulations stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child abuse case.
The positions, which include one full-time employee and one part-time, will cost the county about $21,000 per year. The state funds the remaining 80 percent of the positions’ cost.
CYS Director Charlie Johns told the county commissioners there has been a 37 percent increase in reports made to the agency and a 125 percent increase in abuse case assignments since the new regulations went into effect in 2014.
Butler County CYS added one new position directly following the new regulations in 2014 but “waited to add more until we fully realized the impact,” according to Johns.
“We now know the impact,” he said Wednesday.
The commissioners unanimously approved the new positions.
