The Butler County commissioners have voted unanimously to pass next year’s budget without having to raise taxes.
Commissioner Leslie Osche, Kim Geyer and Kevin Boozel took a vote Thursday morning to pass the $65 million general fund budget for 2019.
The new budget reflects a roughly 1.5 percent spending increase over last year, which equates to about $750,000. But, the board says revenue is keeping up with increased expenses.
“We’re fortunate in this county to continue to have growth,” Osche, chairwoman of the board, said Thursday. “We’ve worked hard to make sure our budget doesn’t outpace that growth.”
The Butler County Prison continues to be the largest operating expense for the county, at roughly $12.4 million.
“Overall, I think the system is starting to gel,” Boozel said. He went on to comment about the cooperation between departments heads and the board. “It’s a lot less of ‘us vs. them.’”
Commissioner Geyer agreed.
“It’s a collaborative effort,” she said.
