As we count down to Election Day next week, our newsroom will look at some of the contested races throughout Butler County.
In the 8th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (which includes most of northwestern Butler County), incumbent Tedd Nesbit is running against retired teacher and political newcomer Judy Hines.
Hines says she didn’t decide to run for the seat until two weeks prior to the primary election. Ultimately, she says she wanted to give voters a choice.
“I looked back into the 8th district and there has not been another choice on the ballot since 2002, and prior to that, there is no record of a choice in the general election,” Hines said in an interview. “I thought to myself…’there’s a lot of people out there that are not going to the polls because they don’t have a choice.’”
Education funding is a top priority for Hines, as is putting a stop to gerrymandering, which is when the boundaries of an electoral constituency are manipulated so as to favor one party.
“I taught school for 35 years and I’ve been going to Harrisburg for over seven years to fight for equal funding for our schools,” she said.
Hines’ opponent, State Rep. Nesbit, is about to complete his first term in office. He is a lawyer and Grove City native.
The General Election is one week from today, Tuesday, Nov. 8.
