Butler City Council will vote Thursday on a motion to approve a resolution that would call for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
The vote was requested by a member of the local chapter of the nationwide organization ‘Our Revolution’ and it calls for abolishing the idea of corporate personhood, as well as the doctrine of money as speech.
Butler Mayor Ben Smith agrees with the idea of reforming the campaign finance laws but thinks the language in this resolution might go too far.
“I love the idea of getting big money, dark money- everything out of politics-…but my problem with this specific one is, it just demeans and moves to take rights away from corporations that I don’t agree with. My problem is the moving piece throughout this; it’s that corporations are bad and should not have rights. I understand the reasons for wanting that, I just can’t support that,” Smith said during a meeting on Tuesday.
City solicitor Tom Breth advised council not to get involved in this kind of political debate.
A local representative of the ‘Our Revolution’ organization will join the “It’s Your Turn” live talk show on WISR 680AM on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 1:30 p.m. to talk about this effort.
