Butler City Council has made a change in the liaison assigned to the Butler Shade Tree Commission.
“I’ve asked Kenny Bonus, with the Mayor’s support, to act as the liaison of the commission and to report to all of council on a regular basis of the Commission’s progress,” Councilman Jeff Smith, who was the previous liaison, said during a city council meeting on Thursday.
Bonus accepted this appointment. Smith had been serving as the liaison to the group for the past nine months but members have attended recent Butler City Council meetings expressing dissatisfaction.
A dispute about who is responsible for memorial benches along Main Street in downtown Butler is a point of contention and has yet to be resolved. According to Smith, the Commission has strayed from their primary mission.
“Though our intent is not to embarrass anyone, it’s necessary to make sure the light of day shines on the Shade Tree Commission, as well as any other body that may need some help in performing at the level that the residents of the City of Butler deserve. That’s why I’m publically sharing some of these issues: no plan or policies of the replacement of dead trees and the failure to address the dead or damaged trees; failure to follow up on violations of Shade Tree ordinance; and possible Sunshine Law violations by some of the members.”
A member of the Commission commented that she and other volunteers serving on Shade Tree strongly disagreed with the allegations made by Smith.
