The first of two dates dedicated to the continued cleanup of the Connoquenessing Creek is Saturday.
Volunteers will focus on a 15-mile portion of the creek in Butler County beginning at the Oneida Valley Reservoir…moving south through the city of Butler…and ending in Renfrew.
“This is one of the dirtiest sections of the creek,” Mike Handley from Allegheny Aquatic Alliance, the group behind the cleanups, said. “There are hundreds of large semi-truck tires, shopping carts…no matter how many boats we put in the creek they are full immediately.”
Volunteers of all skill levels are invited to help. Visit here for more information.
Another cleanup is scheduled for September 12.
Over the last three years, the group has removed over 140,000 pounds of garbage, including over 1,400 tires. In total, the Connoquenessing Creek spans 50 miles throughout several counties.
