Eight Butler County property owners in Connoquenessing Township have settled with Rex Energy. The settlement comes several years after the residents believe the company’s gas drilling ruined their water wells.
According to court papers, Rex Energy paid $159,000 in April to end lawsuits brought by eight property owners in the rural Woodlands neighborhood who say they watched their water turn black or orange or stop flowing altogether right around the time that Rex was ramping up its drilling and fracking in the area. The company listed the settlements of between $11,750 and $27,125, which were paid out on April 17.
Rex Energy continues to deny any wrongdoing.
The amounts and the details of the cases were kept in the dark due to nondisclosure clauses. But, when Rex filed for bankruptcy in May, it had to disclose all of its spending for more than a year preceding the filing.
