The Butler County commissioners asked for prayers for the sickened Butler County Prison workers at their meeting on Wednesday.
The board- Leslie Osche, Kim Geyer and Kevin Boozel- also all praised the prison staff and the Butler County 911 Center for their swift and proper reaction to the situation.
The board said they continue to have confidence in the security at the Butler County Prison and believe this is an issue facing prisons across the region, state and country.
“This is not just a local issue,” Osche said. “This has been happening across the country.”
Commissioner Kevin Boozel agreed.
“As long as you allow people to walk in and out of a building, (the security) is not perfect,” Boozel said. “It can’t be 100 percent.”
Tuesday’s incident comes a week after staff members at the State Correctional Institution in Mercer were hospitalized after coming into contact with a suspicious substance.
Butler County Prison Warden Joe DeMore said Wednesday that local prisons have seen a rash lately of inmates smuggling in synthetic marijuana, also known as K2.
“There’s a lot of jails dealing with the same kind of thing,” DeMore said.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, synthetic opioids, also known as synthetic cannabinoids, are human-made mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices. These products are also known as herbal or liquid incense.
They can go by the street-names of K2 or Spice.
